Frequently Asked Questions About MRI
What is MRI, is it Safe, and How Helpful is it?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnet and harmless radio waves to generate detailed images of the inside of the body without exposure to harmful ionizing radiation such as x-rays. MRI images clearly show different organs and tissues, exposing any abnormalities and pathology.
Many injuries, degenerative conditions, tumors and infections can be diagnosed safely and painlessly by MRI. In many cases, an MRI scan can lead to early detection and treatment of disease without invasive procedures such as biopsy or surgery. An MRI scan can also improve the success of a surgery or treatment, and provide new information showing the need for critical medical intervention.
Can Anyone Have an MRI Scan?
Almost anyone can have an MRI. The magnetic fields and radio waves have no known harmful effects. However, the following conditions may prevent you from having an MRI (please consult with your doctor):
• Pacemaker
• History as a metal worker
• Cochlear implant
• Foreign metal objects in the eye
• Hearing aid
• Shrapnel or bullet wounds
• Aneurysm clips or surgical staples
• Pregnancy or Fever
What Should I Bring and Wear to the MRI Exam?
After your doctor provides you an MRI prescription, either your doctor or you must call us to schedule your MRI exam. Please arrive for your appointment a little early.
You will need to bring your doctor’s prescription, a valid state ID or driver’s license, and your payment with you to the exam. The $395 payment per scan should be made in the form of cash, cashier’s check or money order payable to: Woodbury MRI. No personal checks or credit cards.
Wear comfortable metal-free clothing without metallic zippers, buttons or fasteners (no bras with hooks or any metal - sports bras only). In the winter, be sure to wear an extra layer of clothing and socks. If you are having a head or neck scan done, please do not wear makeup. Be prepared to remove shoes, jewelry, electronic or magnet-sensitive items, and possibly metallic make-up before you enter the MRI scan room. Please leave all your valuables in your locked car/trunk.
What Should I Expect for the MRI Exam?
No special dietary preparations are usually needed. On the day of the scan you may eat normally, drink
fluids, and take any medications you usually take, unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
You will be required to remove shoes, jewelry, electronic or magnet-sensitive items, and possibly metallic make-up before you enter the MRI scan room. We can also provide you a gown and additional pillows or blankets as needed for your comfort during the scan.
The MRI technologist will ask you a few questions just before your scan, and then place you on the scanning bed. A coil will be placed on the part of the body being examined to obtain an image. Once you are comfortable, you and the scanning bed will be positioned for the scan. If you have been claustrophobic in the past, or if you have a large frame and have concerns, our staff will be able to answer your questions and assist you in your comfort.
Once your scan is complete, we will provide you a CD of your MRI images to take to your referring physician. The digital images of your MRI scan will also be read by a Board-certified radiologist who will interpret the images and provide a report directly to your doctor’s office within 24-48 hours.
